There are few techniques thatoffer such diversity of expression while still being relatively economical.Once the desired shape is created a relief-like design isapplied by chasing from the outside. Chasing is the oppositetechnique to repoussée, and the two are used in conjunction to create afinished piece. While repoussée is used to work on the reverse of the metal toform a raised design on the front, chasing is used to refine the design onthe front of the work by sinking the metal. The term chasing is derived fromthe noun "chase", which refers to a groove, furrow, channel orindentation. The adjectival form is "chased work".The techniques of repoussée and chasing utilize the plasticityof metal, forming shapes by degrees. There is no loss of metal in theprocess, as it is stretched locally and the surface remains continuous. Theprocess is relatively slow, but a maximum of form is achieved, with onecontinuous surface of sheet metal of essentially the same thickness. Directcontact of the tools used is usually visible in the result, a condition notalways apparent in other techniques, where all evidence of the working methodis eliminated.Remarks:This extremely rare antique bronzeartifact dates to approx. the 17th – 18th Century AD Don’t miss theopportunity to own a genuine piece of history.
