What is Gold Vermeil?:VERMEIL, which ispronounced "vehr-MAY," is 925 Sterling Silver which is plated withGold. Vermeil is a combination of Sterling Silver and Gold commonly used as acomponent in jewelry. A typical example is Sterling Silver coated with 18K or24K Gold. To be considered VERMEIL, the gold must be at least 10 karat (42%)and be at least 2.5 micrometers thick. In the US and various other countries,Sterling Silver covered first with a base metal (such as nickel) and thanplated with Gold cannot be sold as vermeil without disclosing that itcontains base metal.Allour Vermeil beads, findings and jewelry are at least 3-microns (micrometers)thick gold-plated and do not use any base metal such as Nickel. All ourproducts are 100% FREE of any Nickel and conform to US and EU standards andregulations. The word "VERMEIL" is a French word which came into use in theEnglish language, mostly in America,in the 19th century as an alternative for the usual term silver-gilt.Vermeil can be produced by either fire-gilding or electrolysis. The originalfire-gilding process was developed in Francein the mid-18th century; however, France later banned theproduction of vermeil because over time artisans developed blindness due tomercury involved in the process. Today, VERMEIL is produced by electrolysiswhich is much safer than fire gilding yet produces a very similar resultThe White House has a collection of vermeil tableware kept on display (whennot in use) in the Vermeil Room. The Code of Federal Regulations 16, Part 23.5 defines Vermeil: "Anindustry product may be described or marked as 'vermeil' if it consists of abase of Sterling Silver coated or plated on all significant surfaces withGold or Gold alloy of not less than 10 karat fineness, that is of substantialthickness and a minimum thickness throughout equivalent to two and one half(2 ½) microns (or approximately 1/10000ths of an inch) of fine Gold."Less than 2.5microns is NOT Vermeil and is considered as simple Gold plating only. Vermeil JewelryVermeil is a more expensive version of Gold plated jewelry. It consists of a925 Sterling Silver base that is coated or plated with Gold. And again, if the longest lifespan is in the first place for you, your optionis VERMEILVermeil is much more durable than simple very thin gold plating. No wonder that theprice is also high. Gold plated jewelryGold plating is the term used to describe the process of plating jewelry madeof either precious (silver) or non-precious base metal (zinc, nickel, copper)with a thin layer of gold, which is depositing their by electrochemicalmethods. As it was said the layer is very thin and thus easy to scratch. Italso naturally wears thin with time, exposing the metal below.Mabe pearls:These gorgeous PenguinWing Oyster Mabe Pearl wascultured in the pristine tropical waters of the Islandof Sumbawa / Indonesia.Mabe Pearls are quite different from what you might consider“normal” pearls. The reason for this stems from the way that Mabe pearls areformed. Mabe pearls are considered to be “semi-spherical cultured pearls”.Instead of growing inside the body of the mollusk creature, as is the casewith other pearls, Mabe pearls grow against the inside shell. This process causes Mabe pearls to have a flat side, asopposed to being relatively spherical, or at least rounded like standardpearls. This also explains why Mabe pearls are frequently called “halfpearls”. Mabe pearls come in a wide range of beautiful colors, which spanfrom light pinks, to more bluish shades. The unique nacre of the Mabe oysterallows for hues that are quite brilliant and rainbow-like. Their brillianceis quite breathtaking at times, especially in the rarest color, whichconsists of pink with gold swirls. It is this type of color which brings thevalue to the Mabe pearls, as well as their rare superiority in texture andluster. To culture a Mabe pearl, the process is different thanculturing round pearls. It is accomplished by inserting the nucleus flushagainst the side of the mollusk – which is the Mabe Pearl Oyster (Pteria penguin), also called Penguin WingOyster – causing the oyster to make its nacre deposits over the nucleus, and against the inside of its shell, forming a semi-spherical pearl. The Mabepearl oyster, also referred to as the penguin wing oyster – is what is usedas the mother shell for Mabe pearls. These are highly distributed across theworld’s tropical and semi-tropical seas, making them readily available tomany pearl farmers at different ends of the globe. Due to this one flattened side, Mabe pearls become the idealchoice for jewelry such as earrings and rings which allow for a securesetting, and a concealed flat back. The Mabe pearl first reached its popularity in the end of the19th century, and from that time until the mid 20th century, many differentefforts were made to attempt to cultivate the Mabe pearl – most of which werein vein. Many hearts were broken, and most tries were fruitless. However, some pearl farmers continued to persevere with their research, and finallyestablished breeding techniques for the Mabe pearl oyster in 1970, followedfive years later by the mass production of cultured pearl harvests. Today, the production of cultured Mabe pearls has become quitestable, and the results are absolutely gorgeous. Depending on the desiredsize, 2 to 6 years are needed for each pearl. However, for those who enjoythe Mabe pearl, it’s well worth the wait. The producers wait patiently for many years while the Mabepearl oyster work their magic resulting in a thick, lustrous nacre (pearlcoating) which gives the Mabe pearl its color and luster. When ready, the Mabe pearls are harvested and carefully gradedaccording to size, color, luster and other quality characteristics.Hemispheric Shape -A Distinct CharacteristicThe Mabe pearl develops in a hemispheric form, with a flatback. While in the oyster a Mabe pearl is actually considered a blister pearlnot a Mabe pearl. After the blister pearl has been 'worked' it then becomes aMabe pearl. Blister pearls are worked by cutting the pearl out of the shellwith a circle-bit drill. The nucleus is then removed and replaced withfiller. The back of the pearl is capped with a piece of mother-of-pearl tocomplete the Mabe pearl. The Mabe pearl oyster produces exquisitely colored and highlyiridescent nacre. The colors of the penguin oyster pearl are rich and exotic;an inspiration from nature’s spectrum of rainbow colors.Blue body Mabe pearls come in a wide range of beautiful colors, whichspan from light pinks, to more bluish shades. The color of Mabe pearls isinfluenced during the cultivation. The implanted nucleus is painted with aspecial ink which will slowly release the color during the cultivationprocess inside the live oyster. This Indonesian developed process willenhance the undertones of the color seen on the surface. The color penetratesinto the nacre and gives a rather natural appearance in comparison to anyother treatment (chemical dyes which are sometimes used to color Mabe lookalways very artificial).Remarks:These Gold Vermeil on solid genuine 925 Sterling Silver hookearrings are hallmark stamped 925 !
